Historic Ossian Sweet House

Worked to transform multiple spaces in the Historic Ossian Sweet House in Detroit, Michigan.

The Ossian Sweet House is a Nationally recognized historic monument, destined to become a civil rights museum and education hub.

Ossian Sweet Dining Room

To stay true to the history of the house and intention of the owner, a time period appropriate stencil of a William Morris design was used on 4 walls of the dining room. Colors were formulated to be soft and elegant, to overshadow any of the other beautifully designed elements in the room.

  • First, large areas are blocked in then the stencils must be modified to finish the edges and corners. The final color details in the flowers and acorns were hand painted and the work was inspected for any inconsistencies that needed to be corrected.

Ossian Sweet Master Bedroom

The history of the Ossian Sweet House is tinged with tragedy, but also hope and social justice. The idea was to transform the master bedroom, the stage where a tragic event unfolded in the 1920s, from a center point of darkness to one of light and renewal.

  • The owner wanted a floral pattern that was time period appropriate. Through research, another William Morris pattern was found with a serendipitous name, Meadow Sweet.

  • The stencils were modified in order to register four main colors into the design. Then an additional stencil was designed and hand cut to register further detail. To finish it off, hand painting was included as a final touch to add another level of complexity.

  • Ceiling Stenciling is a surefire way to add a show stopping design element to a room.

  • Ceilings can be challenging but with experience and dedication, any vision can be achieved!

  • Right Meets Left Interior Design

Was hired by industry leading interior designer, Courtney McLeod, to design and install a custom boarder for a design showhouse in High Point, North Carolina.

  • Courtney was open to design suggestions and colors within her desired pallet. Design concepts were digitally drawn out and approved for installation.

  • The end product was a 6 color custom design in the art nouveau style, utilizing hand cut stencils with hand painted details.
